Packaging is one of the most visible expressions of a beauty brand’s standards. In Canada, it is also an area where broad environmental language creates real commercial and legal risk. The stronger approach is specific: know the material, know the claim and keep the evidence.
Design for the Canadian context
Refillable systems can reduce packaging across repeat purchases when the refill format, transport impact and customer behaviour support the claim. The benefit should be explained precisely rather than presented as automatically sustainable.
Post-consumer recycled content should be stated as a verifiable percentage for the relevant component. There is no universal 50% credibility threshold for Canadian beauty packaging. Canada’s proposed recycled-content framework uses different targets by packaging category and timing, which is why brands should verify the rules that apply to their format.
Recyclability depends on more than the resin symbol. Collection and processing vary across Canada, and multi-material pumps, labels, liners and closures can change what happens to a package after use. Packaging claims should reflect the full component, not only the easiest material to describe.
Paper and fibre alternatives may reduce plastic, while coatings, adhesives, windows and protective requirements still matter. Product protection and shelf life remain part of the environmental calculation.
Make claims that can survive scrutiny
The Competition Bureau states that environmental claims must not be false or misleading and must be adequately tested or substantiated where required. It advises businesses to make claims that are specific, evidence-based and not exaggerated.
That makes terms such as “eco-friendly,” “green” and “biodegradable” poor shortcuts. A stronger package tells the buyer exactly what changed: the percentage of recycled content, whether a component is refillable, which certification applies, or how material use was reduced.
The retail question
A retailer needs to understand the claim quickly and repeat it accurately to a customer. Before entering Canada, prepare a component-level packaging record, evidence for every environmental statement and plain-language education for buyers and store teams.
